The Chosen One(s)....

For our research, we have to study several music video theorists and several music videos, in order to broaden our understanding of music videos and how they work. I have started making a Prezi about Sven E Carlsson, Michael Shore, Andrew Goodwin and Pete Frazer, all of which have developed theories on how music videos work and what message they're trying to convey or represent. It's important that I go into depth when doing my research on these theorists because this helps me develop a more analytical eye when I'm analysing both my own and other people's music videos. I'll also be able to apply the theories to the music videos that I'm watching.

The music videos I have chosen to analyse are:

  • Halestorm's 'Familier Taste of Poison'
  • Katy Perry's 'California Gurls'
  • Keane's 'Soverign Light Cafe'
  • Taylor Swift's 'We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together'
  • Paramore's 'Hate To See Your Heartbreak'
  • Katy Perry's 'Unconditionally'
  • Sleeping With Siren's 'Do It Now, Remember It Later'

I wanted to analyse an array of different types of music videos instead of a few from the same or similar artists that are all narrative based. I feel this will allow me to have the best research possible going ahead into planning.

Welcome to the jungle...

Welcome to my new A2 Media Blog! I plan to make this blog 10x better than my AS blog and learn from the mistakes I made last year, in order to grow and develop as an A2 Media student.
Our task for this year is to create either a music video or a film trailer; we spent our first lesson looking through some brilliant past examples and Mr Earl showed us what was good about each trailer/video and what could have been improved upon. The cogs in my head immediately started whirring as I didn't even realise that making a film trailer was an option this year! However an idea for a music video hit me as soon as I left that day, followed by several more ideas which led me to decide that I would focus on music videos for this coming year. I feel like I explored some of the aspects of film-making last year and I want to try something new and exciting!
I already have a couple of ideas and artists lined up in my head but I'm slightly torn. Part of me wants to research, plan and eventually create a huge Katy Perry style extravaganza with balloons and music and parties whereas another part of me wants to channel a more subdued vibe and possibly use some music by Keane or Sleeping At Last. Then ANOTHER part of me wants to try and think of something completed radical and new so over this weekend, I'm going to be sitting down and mind-mapping all my ideas for this project. Hopefully I'll have a clearer idea of what I want by next lesson!
